Tulare County remains in "Tier 1" which basically means people keep getting sick and dying in our county at a higher rate than other counties so nail salons can still only continue to operate outdoors.

Well...it's late summer now. You can kinda smell fall creeping in around the edges. Pumpkin Spice is back at Starbucks (All hail the pumpkin spice gods! ...yes, I'm a founding member of that cult, thank you,) the June bugs are long since gone, and the evenings are cooling off enough to be downright pleasant.

It would be entirely feasible to wheel the nail desk out onto the sidewalk after about 6 PM these days. Except for the lacewings-- those things are still a nuisance.

Except now we have the additonal issue of smoke from the entire state being on fire!

And I'm still unclear on the City's tolerance for salon services being done outdoors on City property? I don't see any other nail techs in town out on the streets.

The hard truth of the matter is that, for the time being, I have, once again, stepped away from the salon business.

It was a rough decision that was made after too many sleepless nights worrying about the financial impact of the continued closure, too many frustrating internet searches trying to stay up to date with whether or not we'd be able to reopen, too many concerns about the rising numbers of serious cases of COVID-19 in the county and access to information about how those cases affected local hospitals.

It was a rough decision that came upon discovering that I am facing some unexpected health concerns that put me in a far higher risk category than I'd suspected.

It was a rough decision that came after heartbreaking evidence that people in my community would rather risk my life than take simple precautions against spreading disease.

I mean...really.

But then, many of you have heard me say for years that the real reason so many people want a zombie apocalypse is that-- deep down-- we really just want to kill our neighbors. I just didn't realize how spot on I was!

Anyway...I thought I'd just go ahead and slip in a little of that old sarcastic, pot-stirring Maggie I'm famous for. I wouldn't want to disappoint anyone. 😏

Once again, the Art of Nailz site will continue to exist and with luck, I'll be updating it soon with good news and glitter.

Until then-- stay safe. Don't kill your neighbors. Don't let your neighbors kill you. Be kind.

And don't get too good at doing your own nails!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4246478809574627884.post-72741906279897498042020-08-29T03:35:00.001-07:002020-08-29T03:35:28.877-07:00On Working Outside

Let me tell you a story:

I think it was the summer of 2005. I had my own salon in a retail pad-- you might remember, when I was behind the donut shop?

It was July and we were having a record heatwave-- 30+ days in triple digits.

My air conditioning went out in the salon.

Anyone remember that?

Mom was working with me back then and she spent that month making multiple trips back and forth to the neighboring 7-11 to buy bags of ice.

Which I was using to keep my nail products cool in an ice chest beside my nail desk.

Every nail I did that month looked like utter crap. Because acrylic cures faster when warm.

I had to buy different product, a "summer" liquid that's designed to set slower in warmer temperatures.

It was still setting faster than I could work with it-- and I work fast.

I did a lot of filing, and I had a lot of lifting-- because the faster acrylic sets, the less time it has to properly bond to the nail plate. (That's the super quick and easy explanation.)

The other problem I faced, was that nearly all salon products need to be stored at temperatures below 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Once my primers and my monomers get hot-- they're dead. Heat breaks them down and renders them ineffective.

Solvents evaporate faster, leaving products half-cured and useless in their bottles.

Oh, and let's not forget a discussion on sunlight.

Our UV-cured products-- all these fancy gel polishes, hard and soft gels (whatever that even means these days, but don't get me started on that) and, to some extent, our prized protein bonders-- they take heat a little better.

They still can't be stored at higher temperatures, but they're still reasonably easy to work with in warmer temps. What they can't handle-- is sunlight. Because the "UV" in "UV-cured" stands for "ultra-violet" and ultra violet light is something the sun doles out in far greater quantities than my gel lamp.

I once worked in a salon where I sat directly in front of a south-facing window-- I lost a lot of gel brushes to that window and a couple pots of gel, just from the sunlight pouring in through the blinds.

Now imagine actually working outside.

Plus-- bugs. I already do most of my services after 5 PM and in the summer heat of the Central Valley, I think we can all agree that sunset appointments would be preferred. But that's when the bugs come out and bugs love UV light.

Can you imagine?

Yeah, me either. Doing nails outside isn't a viable solution to the issue of reopening the salon. And that's assuming the City of Visalia, the landlord, and the various insurance companies involved with determining liability all agree to let nail techs move their desks outside.

Oh yes, let's not forget the fire codes that abhor an extension cord!

So even though the state may be letting us work outdoors-- the state isn't the one that has to actually do nails outdoors.

I'm sorry to say, it's not going to happen.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4246478809574627884.post-89903032619773516872020-06-23T01:07:00.000-07:002020-06-23T01:07:01.564-07:00Reopening-- What to Expect

It's finally time!

One Love Nail Salon will be reopening July 1, 2020.

However, Maggie (me,) will not be returning to the salon until July 15, 2020.

The salon has some new policies in place and it's vital that everyone who chooses to book an appointment be aware of them:

1. Yes. Face coverings are mandatory. For you, for me, for everyone in the salon and for the entire duration of the time we are in the salon.

I understand that many people have strong feelings about face masks so you need to understand that this is a non-negotiatable issue for receiving services.

It's one of the requirements we have to follow in order to reopen without risk to our professional licenses and just a good idea.

If it's a deal breaker issue for you-- I will not be able to accomodate you at this time.

2. We will be taking your temperature when you arrive.

This is something my co-workers agreed on as a precautionary measure for the protection of everyone in the salon.

Again, there is not opt-out. If you are uncomfortable with this, you should not attempt to book an appointmentn with me or any of my salon colleagues.

3. Wash your hands: There will be hand santizer gallore! But if you want me to touch your hands, you'll need to wash them with soap and water for 20+ seconds before we begin your service.

On that note-- I will not be wearing gloves while I work. It is not a requirement for reopening and it's been a point of serious consideration for me through out my career, not just in the face of the pandemic: I have long held the opinion that if it is not safe to touch my clients (and vice versa) then neither of us have any business attempting a nail service. Full stop.

I will-- of course-- also be washing and santizing my hands between each client. However, if you are not comfortable receiving services from a nail tech not wearing gloves, again-- I will not be able to accomodate you at this time.

4. No Guests! There can only be one person per nail tech in the salon at a time. Do not bring anyone to your appointment with you, they will not be able to wait inside while you are getting your nails done.

5. NO WAITING INSIDE! We cannot have people waiting inside the salon. When you arrive for your appointment, please text me to let me know you are here and I will let you know when I'm ready for you to come in.

6. Sign the Waiver! It's just a basic form that says you understand that no matter how hard we work to protect your health and safety, there are no guarantees that you won't get sick.

You've probably seen them posted on the entrance of about every business that's open. We're just going one step further to make sure you can't say "I didn't see that."

Online booking is currently not available. All appointments will have to be scheduled directly with me. Text me (or leave a voicemail, but really, text me) at my business number: 559-640-7319 for appointments.

I am not currently taking new clients! If you have never been to me before, I will be happy to take your information and put it on a wait list, but at this time, I am choosing to reopen slowly and will be keeping my availability to a minimum.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4246478809574627884.post-12326055861702430282020-03-28T03:33:00.000-07:002020-03-28T03:33:02.594-07:00Non-Essentail Nail Tech is Busy Being Non-Essential

And here's the long-winded, slightly manic rant that I know you all expect:

First off-- I never wanted to be an "essential" worker. I've always said that I love that no one's going to die if I miss a day of work.

I never thought I'd be in a situation where someone might die if I DON'T miss a day of work!

I love that over the years, I have had so many wonderful, loyal clients who feel that I am essential to them but let's face it-- if the worst thing that happens in all this is that you need a new set the next time you see me, we're gonna call that a win.

You are not going to die if you don't get your nails done. However, we are currently dealing with a situation where you might die if you do get them done.

Or you might kill your nail lady.

Or you might kill your nail lady's mom.

Or your nail lady might have forgotton to wipe down the gas pump when she filled up on her way into town and then I probably touched my face before I got around to washing my hands.

The point is-- the world does not need me right now.

I know you want me, but let's not get confused.

I am busy chillin, staying healthy, and helping others stay healthy too.

No. I won't be doing nails on the sly at my home or yours.

I've considered the risks all along the way and continue to re-evaluate my personal opinions on a daily basis.

At this time, the risks to myself, my clients, my loved ones, and my community are just too great for me to justify.

OK. That wasn't very long or manic or even terribly rant-y. That's the advantage of having backspace and delete buttons.

Believe me-- I've gone on 30 different rants and shouted several curse words while calling nearly everyone on the planet a variety of creatively insulting names and declaring myself the ultimate authority on all things concerning wisdom and truth.

I know my clients, colleagues, and personal friends are deeply saddened by the edits.

As much as I miss my glitter and rhinstones, it should surprise no one who knows me well that the part of social distancing that is most challenging for me is the lack of a captive audience.

I miss you guys!
That's because I hit a snag with that service and have opted to go with a different online scheduling provider.

Online appointments are now being booked on Shedul! If you're an existing client, you'll have to register with the new service. If you have any trouble, you can always text me at (559) 640-7319 and I'll be happy to help figure it out with you.
It's been a very long time since I had product on my nails at all and I've been working as a ranch hand for the last 8 months.

Over all, I've been really proud of how well I've managed to care for my hands, but there are few more calluses than look good in photos and my cuticles are are far from model-worthy.

Not to mention-- I'm still helping on the ranch and I have a lot of typing to do.

My own nails are not my best advertisement.

I'd love to do some more long nails...and some more coffin nails...and some more of these rhinestone clusters...and some more...
You get the picture.
Don't worry, it confuses me too!

No. I did not get married and, no, I did not get unmarried.

"Maggie" has always been a nickname-- it's short for "Marjorie."

It's a bit of an unconventional nickname for Marjorie but it's traditional as "Marjorie" is the French version of the name "Margaret" (which is English-- and my spelling is the Scottish spelling, just FYI) so I'm totally allowed to use any of the nicknames associated with Margaret.

When I went into nails in 1992 I was 22 years old. For a long time I just went by "Marge" because it was really easy to tell people "Marge, like Simpson."

But what would peoples' first image be of a nail tech named "Marge" when they asked someone "who does your nails?"

Well the first image that popped into my head (in 1992) was Madge, the Palmolive lady.

Remember her?

I was a 22 year old newbie with lots of energy and passion for my new career. I was all about acrylic talons and loads of nail art!

The last thing I wanted people thinking of when they heard my name was a dish soap commercial from the 60s!

So I decided to go with "Maggie." Hoping it sounded younger, more fun, and more artsy.

It seems to have done the trick.

But how did my last name change? That's slightly more complicated:

Mom took her maiden name back when she got divorced, but she didn't want to pay to have my name changed so she never did.

I grew up using her last name and through a series of "things were different back then" circumstances with the Social Security Administration and a replacement SS card in my teens-- I ended up with her last name on all my documents...except my birth certificate.

So, in 2016, when my BFF and I decided to take a trip to Cartagena, Colombia (Like in Romancing the Stone-- we might be 80's girls) and I finally applied for a passport-- I hit a wall of post 9/11 Patriot Act bureaucracy that forced me to change all my paperwork back to my legal name.

For consistency's sake, I continue to use my known name (Maggie Franklin) as my working name (also, it's what I recognize and answer to,) but for legal reasons-- I am officially Marjorie Hare to the State Board of Cosmetology.

Polygel extensions sculpted on forms in a variety of colors.

They come in a variety of names: "Polygel," "Acrygel," "Hybrid Nails," and all of the names are a little misleading when it comes to the true chemistry involved with the products.

For Nail Nerds like me-- that can trigger a nervous twitch.

But the companies that are making them call them what they call them and I'm kinda stuck with that.

No matter what they're called-- these high viscosity sculpting gels are my new favorite toy!

I'm still experimenting with the variety of brands and colors available before choosing a favorite, but so far these things have stood up to some abuse.

They can be sculpted very thin-- or not so thin-- to meet your needs.

They're lightweight, more flexible than acrylic and stronger than thinner gel products.

They're also odorless and less dusty to file than other products.

They aren't officially on the service menu yet, since I'm still in testing mode, but if you want to give them a try, shoot me a message (559-640-7319) and let me know!

Well first, I moved to South Lake Tahoe to live in a tiny cottage with a dog that hated me and live my life as a <strike>hermit</strike> I mean, writer.

As it turns out, I'm not really an introvert who thrives on silence and solitude.

Maybe I should have guessed that from spending 25 years talking my tongue out to every poor soul who dared to let me hold their hands for an hour?

Well, maybe you knew already knew, but it was news to me.

I lost the dog in the dead of winter and the tiny cottage got tinier, colder, and lonelier.

A year after moving to Tahoe, I found myself-- much to my surprise-- back in the central valley spending my days helping a buddy get his calf operation off the ground.

???

Yup, that's what I said. I went from spending my days covered in dust and glitter to spending my days covered in mud and...shall we just say "cow?"

But baby cows...How could I refuse?

How did I go from one extreme to the other? Swing by for a nail appointment some time and I'll give you the short version. (Lie. It is a well-known fact that I am unable to tell the short version of any story!)

As of October 22, 2018, my humble operation will be hosted by a new location:
Blessings Nail and Hair Salon
2015 W Tulare Ave
Visalia CA 93277

Located on Tulare Ave just west of Mooney Blvd, Blessings is a small venue that promises more privacy, an opportunity to expand my availability, and the casual atmosphere that my clientele has come to associate with me over the years.

I'm working with yet another online booking system too-- so if your reminders come from a new number, that's the reason.

I'm excited about the new place, folks! There are few things that I had to give up...but ultimately, I feel like Blessings is going to be a better fit for me, my clients, and my business.

Plus! It's right next to Starbucks and 7-11! That means I get coffee and sodas to keep my caffeine reserves on full so I can keep up my stream of non-stop, manic chatter that I really don't understand why my clients put up with.

Looking forward to seeing you at the new place soon!
~Maggie

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4246478809574627884.post-38822740326982564362018-09-17T10:10:00.001-07:002018-09-17T10:10:58.009-07:00This @!*!&*! Online BookingBear with me, folks! I promise online booking will be reliably available and running smoothly very soon.

Back at the end of 2012, while I was recovering from a broken wrist and forced to take 8 weeks off work, I spent some time researching, and painstakingly test-driving, online booking software options.

I eventually settled on one that met my rather persnickety criteria at the time and spent the next 3 years merrily paying their fee for a service that was pricey as online booking for a solo tech goes-- but worked just the way I wanted it to.

When I came back to the salon a few months ago, I promised myself I wasn't going to be such a control freak. This time around, nails is a hobby, not a full time career. I'm not running my own empire anymore (at least not in the nail industry) and it makes perfect sense to use the same system the salon I'm booth renting in does.

Right?

Except the salon uses a system I test drove back in 2012/13. I remembered that it frustrated me then, but I told myself that was because I was being unyielding. It's a popular salon booking system and it works for thousands of people-- it's just me and I can get over myself.

Weeks later-- it might just be me. But it's my business. It's my schedule. You are my clients and this is your time and schedule as well.

You deserve better.

The tiny glitches and inconveniences of working with software that I don't find intuitive costs us both time and patience. The lack of features and ease of interface on the back end that make me crazy result in too many errors in managing my schedule.

Vagaro and I don't get along.

So, you may notice that it (should) be impossible to book an appointment with me online at the moment. Please feel free to text me!

I am testing some options that are new since I chose my previous system, and revisiting a couple that didn't meet my criteria then but might now.

In the end...it's very possible that I will end up with something that's already proven itself. For the moment, you might find my "book now" button taking you to new and exciting places as I try to find a perfect fit.

Feel free to give me feedback on what you like and don't like.

I packed up my supplies, sold off most of my stuff, gave the key back to the landlord, took my glitter and moved to Tahoe.

I spent a little over a year in an authentic cabin near the lake, working in the independent publishing industry-- writing, editing, proof-reading, and creating cover artwork for indie authors.

Then I got bored.

I guess "bored" is a good term.

After 25 years of holding hands, laughing and talking to other people ALL DAY LONG-- I thought I'd love the solitude and the sound of nothing but my mechanical keyboard as I type.

And for about a minute, I did.

I did love the opportunity to embrace my night owl nature. I went to bed with the sunrise and woke when darkness fell like a true vampire.

I also loved not being tied to a schedule. As long as I had my trusty laptop with me and could find wifi for at least a couple hours a week, I could go anywhere! And I did some of that as well: I chased the solar eclipse all the way to Seneca, Oregon; I spent 10 days in Cartagena, Colombia; I got in some hiking and some camping and a good, long trip to the Rice Shoe Fence out yonder past 29 Palms, CA.

Then a friend of mine-- one of those people who emerged at the last minute and elevated from "random person who was always sorta around but not close" to "one of my closest friends on the planet despite being one of the most unlikely candidates" decided to raise cattle full time.

Now THAT is an entirely different adventure! And primarily someone else's at that. But-- after months of hearing about his attempts to make it work, I finally got a tour of the ranch while I was passing through the Valley on my way to Disneyland.

And I never left. (Well, I did go to Disneyland. Duh!)

Partly because when I showed up that April morning, I was immediately put to work.

And then I did something that NO ONE WHO HAS KNOWN ME FOR THE LAST 48 YEARS WOULD HAVE SUSPECTED: I volunteered to come back to the ranch the next morning-- at 6 AM.

Late spring and early summer of 2018 has been a lot of trips back and forth between South Lake Tahoe and a small calf operation currently located somewhere in the Devil's Triangle of the Hanford/Goshen/Kingsburg outback.

So just this week, I did something else that I never expected to do: I moved back to the valley. To get up at 4 am and work on the ranch 7 days a week for the foreseeable future.

So what am I saying?

Why am I telling you this?

On my NAIL BUSINESS website?

Well maybe-- just maybe-- I miss talking to people.
Maybe-- just maybe-- I miss the smell of monomer.
Maybe-- just maybe-- I'm thinking I could probably handle a few clients a week again?

I have some ducks to get back in a row before I can make any promises-- but maybe-- just maybe-- the appointment book is about to get dusted off.

I never thought the day would come when I made this particular announcment but....

I'm retiring.

I enrolled in the nails only course for my California manicurist license in February (the 19th, I believe) 1992.

March 1, 1992 was my first day of class.

I graduated the course in July 1992 (I had a slight gap when I transferred to a different school.)

I took my state board and received my license on Oct 2, 1992. (Back then it took FOREVER between graduating the course and actually getting your state board date.)

I have been doing this for 25 years.

For most of those two and half decades, I truly believed I would be doing this till they pried my file from my cold, dead hands.... or at least until I was about 70.

Things change.

March 23, 2017 will be the last day I call myself a professional nail technician. But not the last day that I will be a licensed nail technician. Because I worked hard for the license and I worked hard to make that license mean so much more than the state California requires it to be-- and because the future is not yet written and it's always good to keep your options open.

That's because The Art of Nailz is currently not accepting new clients. Current clients can continue to book their appointments online through saved links.

I decided to take down the buttons because I know it's really frustrating to people who have been trying to get in. It doesn't help at all that the online booking program shows openings in the schedule to everyone.

It's difficult to explain that those openings are temporary-- they won't be there for long as they get gobbled up by in house booking and current clients.

For the time being, I have also stopped keeping a waiting list. Everyone who is already on the wait list is still there-- I promise! And as time opens up, I'll contact you and offer you what ever openings come up.

It's been a long time since I had space to offer to new clients and watching the wait list grow with no idea how long it might be before an opening will come up kills me.

I worked very hard not to make any major changes to my prices through the recession and for the years of recovery immediately following.

And now I can't put it off any longer.

I'm here to break the news-- prices are going up.

Normally, I don't feel compelled to make a big deal about price increases. They happen all the time in every industry. Restaurants, grocery stores, and gas stations adjust prices constantly without notice. We've all learned to look before we purchase in those industries.

People, unfortunately, take their salon services for granted. They get used to paying the same amount week after week, month after month, and often walk in with their checks already written. I expect consumers to understand that prices fluctuate as needed in the salon industry as well.

In calculating the new prices, I had to account for the rise in cost of doing business over the last few years, I had to account for the increased demands for appointments, and take into consideration my years of experience, advanced certifications, and other achievements within my industry that add to my level of expertise.

I understand that this is a substantial adjustment to the pricing structure that has been in place for the last several years.

I assure you-- I have done the math.

Please Check the New Prices

All clients will get advanced notice of new prices in person and take affect by the end of February.

Openings have come up on occasion and every so often, I'm able to contact someone on my wait list.

Unfortunately, closing the online booking presents problems for several of my regular clients. So this time, you may notice that online booking remains active. However, it is only open to current clients.

If you have not been to the salon in the last 6 weeks, you will not be able to access the booking system.

My biggest concern with this method is that there doesn't seem to be a way for me to make the schedule invisible to people who do not have the password to the system.

So I'm just putting up the blog post to assure anyone/everyone that even if you see openings in the calendar-- I have learned my lesson the hard way-- that does not mean that there's a spot open or that it will remain open for long.

If you are hoping to get in for a full set for a special occasion and don't need a recurring appointment-- contact me by email and let me know. I am far more likely to be able to accommodate one-off services, but I don't have the openings for regular clients.

By all means, you can contact me at any time to have your name added to the wait list, but you should be prepared that it might be six months or longer before you hear from me.

Also...I'm another one of these people who almost never answer the phone these days-- please text.

I'm sure there are a few stores in town that sell nail supplies that would get their feathers all in a ruffle
if they heard me say that.

But trust me-- I've been doing nails professionally for TWENTY-THREE years-- we got squat here.

Back in the day we had Mel's on Main Street. That was the go-to source for pro supplies when I started out. Then I discovered that their #1 selling and recommended acrylic liquid product claimed a proud >89% Methyl Methacrylate Monomer on its MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) and I promptly had a long conversation with Walt Applegate and his cronies that resulted in a boycott of the store that outlasted the store itself.

Good riddance.

I don't need to be giving my money to so-called "professional" supply houses that knowingly and willfully endanger my health and my license by selling products that they know are in clear violation of the California Professional Codes.

For a long time, that left me with Sally's or a trip out of town.

In case you have never noticed, Sally's Beauty Supply is not a genuine professional supply store.

Oh sure-- they have professional only discounts and some professional only products. As in, seriously, their policies do not allow them to sell those products to anyone who does not present the pink card. But most people will tell you that there are plenty of Sally's stores and/or employees who don't put a lot of stock in policies.

Sally's is also very supportive of the professional industry. I don't hold a grudge against Sally's, and they are very useful for picking up a few things here and there. But they aren't adequate for meeting the supply needs of a professional nail technician (or hair stylist, fwiw.)

For years, I relied on mail order to get the products I needed into the salon where I worked. Mostly Nailco (I think they're just "Industry Source" now?) because they put out this beautiful full color catalog every year with slick, shiny pages; they sold most of the stuff I used and/or needed; and they always put a Tootsie Pop in with my orders. They were the bomb.

Then Visalia got a West Coast Beauty Supply.

I was thrilled to the core of my wee little heart.

West Coast was professional only. (cue appreciative "ooooooooh" noise.) You had to have a professional license to shop there.

Well... welcome to the red-headed step child side of the professional industry. Walking through the doors of the place landed you under the icy glare of the pit bull behind the counter who immediately squawked "This store is for professionals only" in an accusatory tone before the little bell that signaled someone had walked in had stopped ringing.

She had a way of making you feel real welcome.

I watched a lot of other professionals walk through that door. Pitbull chick did a better job of relaxing when someone said they were a hair stylist.

Me? I would assure her that I was an actual licensed professional in the state of California and she would give me the once over and a raised eyebrow as if she didn't believe me. Then I'd ask about nail products and-- especially the first few visits-- I was sure she was fighting the urge to say, "I thought you said you were a professional" in a scoffing tone.

So once I fought my way past the door bully, I would find myself standing in front of the 15 square feet of space dedicated to nail products. The space consisted primarily of CND and OPI products-- some polish, some acrylic powder and liquid, and some fancy, over priced files.

Ummmm.....

I need disposable files and buffers-- because California got all uppity about disinfectables about 7 years into my career and insisted they are single use items. I'm not going to spend $1.50 per file for something that gets tossed after each service.

And I don't (and pretty much haven't ever) use CND or OPI acrylic. Even if I did-- they didn't carry the complete lines.

Also-- where's the gel?

Forms?

Buffers?

What do you mean, you've never heard of....????

Then West Coast became Cosmoprof.

Cosmoprof has been friendlier... but less useful. Not only did the nail department not expand, but every single *&@!ing time I go to the store, they have boxes and boxes and boxes of newly shipped supplies stacked in front of the nail supply shelf that serve to completely and most effectively prevent me from shopping for nail supplies at all.

I gave up. Haven't stepped foot in Cosmoprof in 3 years now.

Maly's-now-Saloncentric? Much friendlier. Not any more helpful.

Thank heavens for the Internet! And a couple of small shops in the Fresno/Clovis area for when I'm looking to go on an expedition or just waited too long for UPS.

Meanwhile-- people keep looking at me suspiciously and telling me I don't "need" to go to Fresno for my products. Or mail order them.

"Why don't you just go to Sally's?" they ask.

"Well then, what about that place over by Long John Silvers?" they counter.

What part of I AM RUNNING A PROFESSIONAL SALON HERE is so difficult to comprehend?

I use primarily Tammy Taylor acrylic. Yes-- one of the places I shop in Fresno does carry it. No. Although I'm quite fond of the people at A&M Beauty, I am not at all convinced that they keep their back warehouse adequately air conditioned and move product at a fast enough rate that I can comfortably rely on the quality of the product.

I purchase my Tammy Taylor supplies directly from the company in southern CA via a very sweet sales rep who hears from me once every 12-18 months. Because I buy my product in bulk in order to get the best price and because I don't love paying shipping on multiple orders.

I buy my consumable items such as files/buffers/sanding bands for the drill from a very sweet little supply house that only exists on the Internet.

I get most of my gel polishes from A&M in Fresno, and/or various trade shows-- because, "oooh! Shiny!"

At this very moment in time I am frustratedly banging out this blog post because I can't seem to find a supply source for both Hand and Nail Harmony acrylic sculpting forms AND Marvicide disinfectant.

Shipping rates are astronomical. Partly because they have to be and partly because there are a lot of companies (not just beauty related) that screw you on shipping.

California actually allows companies to charge sales tax on top of shipping charges! WTF? California does not charge sales tax on services--shipping is a service-- sales tax should be calculated PRE-shipping.

You think California's going to tell people to give them less money?

Here's a thought-- where does that money end up? When all is said and done at the end of the quarter, do companies that collect tax on shipping really turn that in to the state? I bet they don't.

Because I have a CA resale permit. I fill out that paperwork every year. They don't ask how much I collected in taxes. They don't ask what I collected taxes on specifically. They ask what my gross retail sales were that are subject to sales tax.

Hmmmm.

So I can't help but suspect that all these companies that are charging me tax on top of shipping are pocketing the extra few pence because-- hey!-- shipping is a service that is not, technically, subject to sales tax.

Another problem is HAZMAT fees on shipping. A lot of my products can't be shipped by air. So they have to take a slow truck/train/boat to get to me. And since a lot of my products are flammable/combustible/subject to spontaneous polymerization-- there are additional handling fees associated with shipping them.

In their sweet, thoughtful hearts, a lot of companies try to make shipping charges simple. So I end up paying shipping based on the price of my order. Sometimes this comes out in my favor (500 files are heavy) sometimes not.

The forms that I want. Really want. Because I really like them. Cost $13 for a roll. BTW-- that's kinda pricey for forms. It's not even a 500 count roll. Ouch. But they are so nice to work with. (And that's why I don't do $20 sets of nails.) But these forms are the ONLY thing I need or want from any of the sources that carry them.

I don't want to pay $15-20 shipping on a 2 or 3 rolls of little stickers. That's insane.

People think I'm crazy for making the 45 mile one-way trip to Fresno for supplies. I've done the math. My little car gets ~33 miles to the gallon. Even with gas at <$4/gallon, it can cost me less to drive to Fresno for supplies than it does for me to pay shipping to order what I need from 3 different sources.

Guess who gets to go to Fresno this weekend?

Qualifying nail artists will be expected to adhere to, and be willing to enforce, all salon policies.

The salon serves an eclectic clientele-- you need to be able to adapt to different personalities, and not be easily offended.

You must be reliable and punctual.

You really need to be enthusiastic about a career as a nail artist; eager to learn and grow as a professional and motivated to contribute to your own success.

I am beginning the process of expanding the salon and am looking to build a team of like-minded professionals to grow the salon and establish the Art of Nailz as Visalia's premier destination for professional nail services.

(I'd also love to find someone who wants to do nothing but toe services: pedicures, rockstar toes, etc.)

If you think you're interested in working at the Art of Nailz with the world-famous, award-winning, controversial-and-slightly-eccentric professional nail artist Maggie Franklin-- shoot me an email at ONYKOPHILE@Yahoo.com.

Please be patient, as August/September is vacation season for me; it might take a few days for me to respond.

It often comes as a terrible shock to the general public-- but Beauty School ALMOST NEVER actually teaches us to do any of the techniques and services that we will perform on a daily basis as Salon Professionals.

It's a total crock, and I have vehement, out-spoken, and (surprise, surprise) controversial opinions on the state of cosmetology programs and state licensing programs.

Never the less-- in order to legally work in a salon and charge for services, one must successfully complete a program in beauty school and then pass both a written and practical State Board examination in order to obtain a State issued license.

All this means for us-- you, the Client and me, the Salon Owner-- is that newly licensed professionals are often underskilled:

A newly licensed professional usually takes considerably longer to perform services-- partly because they are trying very hard.

Partly because they lack the muscle memory built from repetitious movements from hundreds of services.

Partly because they are still trying to remember each step along the way, are still creating their routine, and are still very nervous about making sure their client is satisfied.

Here at the Art of Nailz, we have been expanding our staff and we have been working very hard to develop a training program for our new techs that will help build their skills, confidence, and speed.

What we need now are a few models with open schedules who are able to come in and sit for practice services as the next step in that training program.

Remember-- this is part of a training program and all services will be performed by trainees.*

So I put together a little photo demo that will hopefully help clear this up so you'll know what to ask for when you call a salon:

This is Gel. A lot of salons call it "hard gel" now.
Most hard gels come in little pots, sometimes you see it in a bottle that can be squeezed out onto the nail.

The gel is like thick honey-- some are thinner, some are thicker.
This is being sculpted on a form. It can also be brushed over tips, or overlaid on natural nails.
It has to be built up in layers and every layer has to be cured under a UV lamp:

Most gels take about 2 minutes under a traditional UV light.
Some can take a little less time, some can take a little longer.
LED lamps are getting very popular-- they cure much faster, but not all gels will work with LED.
LED is the type of lightbulb, not the type of light. LED lamps still emit UVA light.

Two coats of color, plus base and top coat. Just like regular polish.
GEL POLISH is popular because the UV curing process means it's COMPLETELY DRY at the end. No waiting for polish to dry, no worryiing about messing it up.
GEL POLISH also has superior adhesion properties, so it lasts on natural nails-- usually about 2 weeks.
